Digital Branding On The Internet

Your logo and tagline are essential to the success of your brand. Obviously, a well-designed logo can be a real asset, and should be eye-catching and memorable, suited to a number of venues. Your tagline—or slogan, as it is sometimes called—should be clear and to the point.

Questions you should ask yourself about your logo:

  • How will your logo look on either a dark or light background?
  • Is it attractive, dynamic, and impactful?
  • How does it look when either large or small?
  • What feelings do its colors evoke?

Questions you should ask yourself about your tagline/slogan:

  • How well does it reflect the core product or service of your business?
  • Is it memorable?
  • Is it short and to the point?
  • What emotional impact does it have?

Here are some examples of well-known taglines/slogans:

  • The Quicker Picker Upper
  • Just Do It!
  • Think Different
  • It’s Everywhere You Want To Be
  • Betcha Can’t Eat Just One
  • Can You Hear Me Now? Good.

As I’ve discussed in previous blogs, branding your business is vital to establishing your prominence in a particular market segment. For example, the name Rolex is synonymous with quality craftsmanship as well as the word “expensive.” Being known for quality is something we should strive for, and though we do not necessarily want to be known as expensive, there are certain market segments that do find high prices desirable.

Whatever image you create for your business should be reflected in your online presence and make you stand out from your competitors. If you’ve ever driven down an interstate highway, I’m sure you’ve seen the bright yellow “M” high in the sky on the shoulder of the road. I don’t even have to tell you what company I’m referring to—I’m sure you already know. Those golden arches are recognized around the world. When you see the “M,” you know what it represents. This unnamed company has invested an enormous amount of time and money to make sure you know who they are and what to expect of them. This principle is the same if you are traveling down the internet superhighway.

How Do I Brand on the Internet?

These are some of the most effective methods:

  • Making sure your logo and tagline are reflected in the masthead or footer of each page of your website
  • Displaying your logo in all online advertising
  • Using your logo and tagline with the complimentary close and signature line of any personal e-mail correspondences
  • Prominently displaying your logo tagline in mass email promotions

For both small and large businesses alike, the benefits of branding can be substantial. Branding creates a quick and valuable impression in the eyes of your consumers and, if done right, can reap you many rewards for years to come.
